Best Modafinil Stack: Supplements That Actually Complement Modafinil
Modafinil on its own is effective. But it has edges — headaches in some users, anxiety in others, and sleep disruption if you are not careful. The right supplements do not add more stimulation. They round off the rough edges, protect against side effects, and let modafinil do what it does best without the downsides.
This is not a list of everything you could take. It is a list of what actually works, based on pharmacology and practical experience. Six supplements, each solving a specific problem.
1. L-Theanine — The Anxiety Eraser
Why it works with modafinil
L-Theanine is an amino acid found in green tea that increases GABA and alpha brain wave activity. It promotes a state of calm alertness — relaxed but not drowsy. When combined with modafinil, it takes the edge off any stimulant-driven anxiety or jitteriness without reducing wakefulness.
The combination is elegant: modafinil provides the drive and wakefulness, L-theanine provides the calm. The result is focused productivity without the tension that some users experience with modafinil alone.
Dosage and timing
200 mg L-Theanine taken at the same time as your modafinil dose. If you experience anxiety later in the day, a second 100–200 mg dose in the afternoon is fine. L-theanine has no meaningful side effects at these doses.
2. Alpha-GPC or Citicoline — The Headache Fix
Why it works with modafinil
The most common modafinil side effect is headache, and the most common cause is choline depletion. Modafinil increases acetylcholine activity in the cortex, which increases demand for choline — the precursor your brain needs to make acetylcholine. If your dietary choline intake is insufficient (and for most people it is), the result is a dull, persistent headache that starts 4–6 hours into the modafinil window.
Alpha-GPC and citicoline are the two most bioavailable choline sources. Both cross the blood-brain barrier and directly replenish the choline that modafinil depletes. Alpha-GPC is slightly more potent per gram; citicoline has additional dopaminergic benefits.
Dosage and timing
Alpha-GPC: 300 mg with your modafinil dose. Citicoline: 250 mg with your modafinil dose. Pick one — you do not need both. If you have never experienced modafinil headaches, you can skip this, but most users benefit from choline supplementation regardless.
3. Magnesium — The Sleep Protector
Why it works with modafinil
Modafinil has a 12–15 hour half-life. Even with optimal morning dosing, some modafinil is still active at bedtime. Magnesium supports sleep through GABA receptor modulation and by calming the nervous system — it counteracts the residual wakefulness without interfering with modafinil's daytime effects.
Additionally, stimulant use (even mild stimulants like modafinil) can deplete magnesium through increased urinary excretion. Supplementing replaces what is lost and ensures you are not building a deficit over time.
Dosage and timing
200–400 mg magnesium glycinate or magnesium L-threonate taken in the evening, 1–2 hours before bed. Do NOT take magnesium at the same time as modafinil — take it in the evening only. Glycinate is well-tolerated and promotes sleep; L-threonate has additional cognitive benefits.
4. Ashwagandha — The Cortisol Buffer
Why it works with modafinil
Modafinil can increase cortisol in some users, particularly those who are already stressed. Modafinil anxiety is not universal, but when it occurs, it is often cortisol-mediated. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an adaptogen with strong evidence for reducing cortisol — a 2012 RCT showed KSM-66 ashwagandha reduced cortisol by 27.9% compared to placebo.
Practically, ashwagandha smooths the modafinil experience. Users who feel "wired but not productive" on modafinil alone often report that adding ashwagandha shifts the experience to "calm and focused."
Dosage and timing
300–600 mg KSM-66 ashwagandha extract taken in the morning with modafinil. The full-spectrum root extract (KSM-66 or Sensoril) has the best evidence. Avoid generic "ashwagandha powder" — standardised extracts are meaningfully more effective.
5. Omega-3 Fatty Acids — The Neuroprotector
Why it works with modafinil
This is not an acute performance supplement — it is long-term neuroprotection. Omega-3s (specifically DHA) are structural components of neuronal membranes and play a role in dopamine receptor density and signalling efficiency. Regular modafinil use increases dopaminergic activity; omega-3s help maintain the system's structural integrity under that increased load.
Think of it as maintenance rather than performance. You will not feel a difference on day one. Over months, you are protecting the hardware that modafinil runs on.
Dosage and timing
1,000–2,000 mg combined EPA/DHA daily with food (fat improves absorption). Timing does not matter relative to modafinil — take it whenever you remember. Look for triglyceride-form fish oil rather than ethyl ester for better absorption.
6. Caffeine (Micro-Dose) — The Synergist
Why it works with modafinil
Caffeine and modafinil have complementary mechanisms. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors (reducing sleepiness), while modafinil inhibits dopamine reuptake (increasing drive). Together they provide a more complete wakefulness effect than either alone. For a deep dive, see the modafinil and caffeine guide.
The key is micro-dosing. A full cup of coffee (100–200 mg caffeine) on top of modafinil often produces anxiety and jitteriness. Half a cup (50–100 mg) produces synergy without overstimulation.
Dosage and timing
50–100 mg caffeine (roughly half a standard coffee) taken 30–60 minutes after your modafinil dose. Do not exceed 100 mg total caffeine on modafinil days. No caffeine after 12 PM to protect sleep.
Goal-Specific Stacks
Maximum Focus Stack
- Modafinil 100–200 mg (morning)
- Alpha-GPC 300 mg (morning)
- Caffeine 50 mg (mid-morning)
- L-Theanine 200 mg (morning)
For deep work sessions. The choline prevents headaches, the caffeine adds alertness, and the theanine keeps it smooth.
Anti-Anxiety Stack
- Modafinil 100 mg (morning, lower dose)
- L-Theanine 200 mg (morning)
- Ashwagandha 300 mg KSM-66 (morning)
- Magnesium glycinate 200 mg (evening)
For users who find modafinil too stimulating. The lower dose plus two anxiolytic supplements (theanine and ashwagandha) creates a calm, focused state.
Sleep Protection Stack
- Modafinil 100 mg (early morning only, before 8 AM)
- Magnesium L-threonate 1,000 mg (evening)
- L-Theanine 200 mg (evening)
- No caffeine
For users who find modafinil disrupts sleep regardless of dosing time. Early dosing, no caffeine, and evening magnesium + theanine to facilitate wind-down.
What NOT to Combine with Modafinil
Not everything belongs in a modafinil stack. Avoid:
- Yohimbine — increases norepinephrine aggressively. Combined with modafinil, the cardiovascular and anxiety risk is not worth it.
- High-dose caffeine (>200 mg) — produces overstimulation, anxiety, and often counterproductive jitteriness.
- Other prescription stimulants — combining modafinil with Adderall, Ritalin, or other stimulants without medical supervision is dangerous.
- MAO inhibitors — contraindicated. MAOIs with any dopaminergic compound risk hypertensive crisis. See drug interactions.
- Excessive dopaminergic nootropics — stacking modafinil with mucuna pruriens, phenylpiracetam, AND L-tyrosine simultaneously is overshoot. Pick one dopamine supporter, not three.
The Bottom Line
The best modafinil stack is not about adding more power — it is about rounding out the experience. L-Theanine and a choline source (Alpha-GPC or citicoline) should be considered near-essential for anyone using modafinil regularly. Magnesium and ashwagandha are valuable additions if sleep or anxiety are concerns. Omega-3s are a sensible long-term foundation.
Start with modafinil + L-theanine + choline. If that works well, you probably do not need more. Add the others only if you are experiencing specific issues that they address. The goal is the minimum effective stack, not the maximum possible stack.
